PennDOT’s traveling workers’ memorial stops in Mercer

PennDOT traveling workers memorial

MERCER, Pa. (WYTV) – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation is recognizing its employees killed in the line of duty with its Traveling Workers’ Memorial.

The memorial was on display at PennDOT’s Mercer County Maintenance Building, as part of its open house event on Wednesday.

The memorial includes 87 posts — one for each PennDOT employee who died in the line of duty since 1970. The most recent happened last month.

The posts are topped with hard hats and safety vests, along with the name of the employee who died.

Organizers say they hope it sends a message to drivers to slow down.

The memorial will remain at the building until Sunday, Sept. 25. You can view it at 215 N. Maple St. in Mercer.

PennDOT’s 21st annual open house event runs through 2 p.m. Wednesday.  It features interactive displays, safety demonstrations and a food drive to benefit area food pantries.
