Mercer boy marches in homecoming parade 1 year after being injured

MERCER, Pa. (WYTV) – The annual homecoming parade marched down Butler Street in Mercer Wednesday evening but for one family, it marks a milestone.

Last year, then 10-year-old Nicholas King was seriously injured in the parade after he was pulled under a vehicle. He was air-lifted to Allegheny Hospital in Pittsburgh.

This year, King and his family marched with the football team coached by his father, Don.

The family says the past year has been incredibly difficult, but they’re thankful for the community’s support.

“I am grateful for my son’s strength. He is an incredible young man who fought very steep odds and is now leading a normal life,” Don said.

King’s mother, Kerri, shares a similar sentiment.

“We’re just so grateful. I mean everyone, for the prayers, the benefit, just people that thought about us.”

King rode on his dad’s shoulders in this year’s homecoming parade.
