Boardman, OH (WYTV) – Golf is a tough game, but Jacinta Pikunas certainly makes it look easy. The Boardman senior holds two school records, drives the ball an average of 250 yards, and already has two hole-in-ones. Plus, her scores in the classroom are also right on the mark, earning Jacinta the honor of our Student Athlete of the Week.
“It’s a rewarding game,” said Pikunas. “You put your time in and you work hard and you’ll get rewarded for it.”
Jacinta certainly puts the time in, 6 days and up to 40 hours a week! And that’s all paid off, the past 3 years, she was named Conference Player of the Year, all three times. Plus, she was State Runner up in Division 1 last season.
“I really grew to love the game, it brings out my competitive spirit,” she said. “I’m probably the most competitive person you’ll ever meet. You’re gonna have highs and you’re gonna have lows but I think just being on that roller coaster is worth the ride.”
Off the course, Jacinta is still right on par. She ranks first in her senior class with a 4.0 GPA and is on track to be class valedictorian.
“For me, when I think student-athlete, it’s not just an athlete, you have to worry also about your future in terms of you know jobs when you’re older and just your education. So I think just think of all the effort that is required of a student-athlete.”
Jacinta’s golf career won’t stop at Boardman. She earned a full-ride scholarship to Akron next year.
“If I do something, I want to do it well. If I do something, I’m going to give a hundred percent into everything I do and just drive to be the best I can be.”
