Do presidential polls matter and does anybody even care?

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WYTV) – Perhaps what’s more important than whether Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump is ahead in the polls, is which of the seemingly endless run of presidential polls is the most accurate and if anyone really cares what it says.

“I’m voting on the issues, not the junk that you hear because you’ll hear good and bad from both sides,” said Darcy Vega, of Austintown.

Tishee Fant, of Youngstown, tries not to get caught up in all of that either.

“More or less, just go with your gut feeling, what you think is the best thing,” she said.

Depending on the source, polls are split both nationally and in Ohio. Some have Trump leading Clinton, others put Clinton ahead and one is a dead heat.

Some voters say it just adds to the noise and confusion of an already contentious campaign.

“I’m not paying attention to the poll numbers at all. I’m going basically by their record, what they have done,” said Olga Irwin, of Youngstown.

Even longtime U.S. Senator Barbara Mikulski, of Maryland, admits she doesn’t care about polls. She was in the Valley Monday giving pep talks to Clinton volunteers.

Mikulski says voters want to know what the candidates can get done if they are elected.

“I think what does matter is the candidate speaking directly to the people through the debate forum. We have a big debate coming up on Wednesday.”

Enoch Wipple, of Youngstown, says it has to be based on facts.

“What will work for you and your town, your community, and I think that’s what people are looking at.”

The presidential election is just a little over three weeks away.
