Program provides clothes to former inmates, helps them get jobs

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WYTV) – One local program is trying to help men recently released from prison to get back on their feet.

Dress to Succeed, LLC cut the ribbon to its clothing warehouse at the Ohio State Penitentiary on Monday.

Prisoners that are selected for the program get a set of leisure clothes and dress clothes for job interviews. The goal is not only help men look presentable for job interviews but also give them clothing to wear out of prison.

Dress to Succeed Executive Director Rose Carter said many of the men who are leaving prison lack resources to buy clothing and find jobs.

“They don’t have clothing, decent clothing. They don’t have shoes. They aren’t able to get work shoes,” she said. “They might be able to get a job, but no work shoes, so it’s a great need just to be able to function daily.”

Much of the clothing is donated. The program also helps the men create job resumes and practice for interviews.

ACTION (Alliance for Congregational Transformation Influencing our Neighborhoods) is an affiliate of Dress to Succeed, which began seven years ago in local churches. The work with Ohio State Penitentiary is a result of the program’s expansion.
