YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WYTV) – A group of Youngstown State students is trying to do their part to raise awareness for domestic violence and the problems it causes.

The class met at Saint John’s Episcopal Church on Wick Avenue Tuesday morning to hear from elected leaders and others about what is being done to help survivors of domestic abuse.

Students also wrote letters of support to local shelters, letting victims know they’re not alone.

“Either heartfelt to an adult, or to a teen or to a child. These letters aren’t addressed to anyone in particular, but they are sending a message of hope, love, and courage and strength so that these letters will be disseminated through the different shelters when somebody comes in,” said Bobbie Ann Dunn, the instructor.

As part of Domestic Violence Awareness Week, the students are also encouraging others to wear purple this Thursday as another show of support for those suffering from abuse.
