AUSTINTOWN TWP., Ohio (WYTV) – Heavy rains caused some problems on Interstate 80 on Thursday morning, and a crash involving a tractor trailer compounded the problem.
Thursday’s heavy rains left high water near the overpass at Salt Springs Road. As Ohio Department of Transportation crews were moving traffic into a single lane to avoid the water just after 7 a.m., a semi drove off the inside shoulder of the highway and hit a guardrail — forcing traffic to be detoured around the area.
Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers say drivers really need to pay attention at all times.
“During rush hour, people are going to work, maybe trying to get home from work and just one, one person just not paying attention drives off the road and strikes a guardrail and causes the situation we had this morning,” said Lt. Brian Holt.
The highway reopened about 9:20 a.m., and traffic is following normally through the area.
Troopers did cite the driver of that semi with causing the crash.
There is a continued chance of rain and thunderstorms throughout the rest of the day.
