Peace Race runners take off in Youngstown

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WYTV) – It may be wet out there today, but the weather is expected to clear up for the Peace Race on Sunday.

Thousands of runners are expected to compete in the 42nd annual event.

The race this Sunday consists of a 10k, a 2-mile walk or run, as well as a 400-meter fun run for the kids.

The kids’ run kicks off the day at 9 a.m. Runners can register for $30 leading up to the event.

It’s called the Peace Race because it was founded at the end of the Vietnam War to celebrate understanding, friendship and competition.

Proceeds go to Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley’s Diabetes Outreach Program, the St. Vincent de Paul Society, Rescue Mission of Mahoning Valley, YMCA’s Partner in Youth Program, Fairhaven School/Special Olympics and The Beatitude House.

If you are not participating you might still be affected. Several area roads in Mill Creek Park will be closed from about 7 a.m. to noon on Sunday.
