CAMPBELL, Ohio (WYTV) – The K-9 officer in Campbell has had a great career, but it’s just about time for a change.
Storm, a Belgian Malinois, has been wearing a badge for six years already.
“He’s had hundreds of drug-related arrests through narcotic detection, traffic stops, building searches. He’s also had apprehensions with violent felons, fleeing suspects, the things people see on TV, that’s what he does,” said Campbell K-9 Officer Eric Manning.
An injury in a car accident on July 18 has led Storm to lighter duty with the force, however. The department is now looking for a new dog, which will cost somewhere around $15,000.
The department is holding a raffle, which has been popular, yet controversial at the same time. It’s the top prizes — guns — that are drawing a lot of discussion.
Manning said while reaction has been mostly positive, there have also been a couple of complaints.
“One of the main complaints that I’m hearing is, ‘You’re a police department. Your job is to get guns off the street,'” he said. “At the Campbell Police Department, we believe in the Second Amendment. We believe in people’s right to bear arms. We believe in law-abiding citizens’ right to own guns. We also believe in Ohio’s concealed carry laws.”
The police department does not stock guns. Raffle winners will get a gift card to a popular sporting goods store which sells guns.
They don’t even have to buy a gun, but if they do, they would still have to pass a background check.
Manning said there has been a lot of interest in the raffle.
“We’ve had out-of-state people that want to participate. Unfortunately, there are federal laws regarding the sale of firearms to out-of-state residents,” he said.
Tickets are $20, and Manning said it goes to a good cause.
“Because of the level of arrests and the impact on crime that the K-9 program has had in the city, we need to keep that going. That’s why it’s essential to get another dog and put it out on the road,” he said.
The drawing will be held on Sunday, December 4. For tickets, call 330-755-1411 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
