YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WYTV) – Mahoning County is looking at a large bill for improvements to the county morgue, and is trying a new approach to the old problem of too many bills and not enough money.
The county is reaching out to Trumbull and Columbiana counties to see if there’s interest in creating a regional morgue.
Commissioners say a regional facility could qualify for grants. They’ve launched a study to see if it’s possible.
“It’s a service that all counties have to provide and it would behoove us all, to the taxpayers of Mahoning County, Trumbull County and Columbiana, to sit down together and see if we can’t come up with a joint venture that works for everyone,” Commissioner David Ditzler said.
Auditor Ralph Meachum is taking charge of the study for Mahoning County. He started talking with other county auditors about the idea in June, and is now working to gather data on coroner operations.
