Leaves on road pose threat to drivers

Leaves on the road can be as dangerous as ice

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WYTV) – Snow, ice and even rain can make driving difficult because the tires just can’t get enough traction on the roadways, but leaves that collect on the road can be just as hazardous as ice, if they are covering the roadway.

When leaves cover a road, drivers should brake slowly and avoid swerving. Treat it just like it’s an area of slush because jerking the wheel or slamming on the brakes could force the vehicle out of control.

“Just make sure your vehicle is in good working order, with heavy rain and snow. Make sure your tires are good and your wipers are good. You should have a snow brush and possibly a small shovel available,” said Sgt. Eric Brown, Ohio State Highway Patrol.

Whether leaves or snow are covering the roads, pay attention to where the lines are, give enough space between you and the car in front of you and don’t drive distracted.

Brown also warns against deer accidents this time of year. If a driver hits a deer, they should pull off to the shoulder, activate flashers and call police.
