YSU brings in 76th Homecoming celebration

YSU homecoming

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WYTV) – It’s homecoming weekend for Youngstown State — and that means tailgates, parades and, of course, a YSU vs. Indiana State football game.

“Excited about what’s happening here,” said Tom Morella, YSU’s assistant athletic director. “We’re excited about our team and excited about our student athletes.”

Saturday marked YSU’s 76th Homecoming, as people tailgated from the early morning-on and marched in the parade, too.

At halftime, Kyle Moore was named Homecoming King, while Rachel Davis won Homecoming Queen honors.

“It’s a lot of fun,” said Rachel Pinti, a junior. “It’s a nice family event. Everyone comes out and you get to see people interact — it’s fun.”

And with YSU going into Saturday with a record of 5-2, fans entered the game with a sense of optimism.

“YSU is such a good team,” said Lauren Getz, a junior. “I watch them every year and most home games I usually attend.”

Scores aside, Homecoming is really about bringing the community together.

“As you can tell, from the cooperation of the weather, it has been awesome,” Morella said. “It’s about getting back, getting together, enjoying family, friends, atmosphere and hopefully enjoying a Penguins victory today.”
