CANFIELD, Ohio (WYTV) – On Monday, many people will be putting on their costumes and hitting the streets for some candy, but there are some things you should know before you go trick-or-treating.
Sergeant Jim Conrad from the Canfield Police Department has some tips in order to stay safe this Halloween.
“Make sure you’re well lit, get glow sticks, carry a flashlight when it gets dark, make sure you’re visible,” he said.
In regards to all the candy you’ll be getting, you’re going to want to avoid your cravings and wait until you get home to dig in.
“Inspect it, make sure there is nothing wrong with the packaging. Anything that is not commercially wrapped, I would hesitate to give my children,” Conrad said.
If the recent clown scares have you feeling on edge, stay alert in case you run into a few.
“Focus on behavior a little bit more than the costume. If someone is threatening, absolutely don’t be afraid to call the police,” he said.
For those who will sit out this Halloween, make sure you’re still on the look-out for trick-or-treaters.
“You need to be extra cautious, pay more attention. Put your cellphones down. Maybe roll your windows down to hear if something hazardous is coming,” Conrad said.
There will also be extra police out to make sure you stay safe this holiday.
