YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WYTV) – The character of Victor Frankenstein is fiction. Mary Shelly wrote the story of Frankenstein creating his monster from body parts.
The Frankenstein family of southern Germany is real, however. They built a castle just outside the city of Darmstadt.
In that castle, Johann Konrad Dippel was born in 1673 and possibly became Mary Shelly’s model for Victor Frankenstein. Dippel, so the legend goes, was into grave robbing and experiments on corpses at Castle Frankenstein. Mary had toured that part of Germany and may have heard the legends.
Did this Frankenstein family come to America?
Yes. Several arrived in the 1820s, and they settled around Cincinnati.
Is our grave site in Canton someone related?
Without the West Lawn cemetery records, it’s difficult to say.
