YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WYTV) – A Dagwood sandwich is a tall, tall, really tall sandwich made with a variety of meats, cheeses and condiments.

It was named after Dagwood Bumstead, the dad in the comic strip “Blondie.” You always saw him making these enormous sandwiches.

The creator, Chic Young, began drawing the huge sandwiches in the comic strip during 1936.

What’s in it?

Anything you want: cold cuts, sliced cheese and vegetables separated by additional slices of bread.

“Dagwood sandwich” is in Webster’s New World Dictionary, and the American Heritage Dictionary.

Two businessmen opened a Dagwood-themed restaurant in Toledo. They wanted to start a chain of restaurants. and the comic strip owner, King Features, said, “No, you’re not.”

A restaurant named Blondie’s opened at Universal in Orlando.

In almost every episode of the cartoon “Scooby-Doo,” in some haunted place or another, Shaggy and Scooby manage to find a well-stocked kitchen and build their vertical sandwiches.
