Youngstown, OH (WYTV) – It’s been quite a year for Mooney’s Lizzie Philibin. She made history on the football team, and just this week, she was named Division 3 District soccer Player of the Year. Plus, Lizzie is just as competitive in the classroom, earning her the honor of our Student Athlete of the Week.
“Oh I’m very competitive, I like to win,” said Philibin. “I don’t take losing well so I guess that pushes me to like try my best when I’m out there because I want to win.”
Lizzie is a three year starter for the Cardinals, scoring a team-high 37 goals this season after coming back from a tough ACL injury.
“I think just never give up, especially like when I tore my ACL, there was days where it was just so gloomy and you’re like, you’re never going to get better. Don’t give up and you keep trying and you keep pushing like you’re gonna get where you want to be.”
This fall, Lizzie made even more history by becoming the first female football player at Cardinal Mooney, serving as a place-kicker for the playoff-bound Cardinals.
“They were so excited and giving me high fives, ” said Philbin. “I was like, I want to kick another one that was awesome. I think I’ll like appreciate it more when I get older but right now it’s just really cool and surreal.”
On top of football and soccer, Lizzie is a top-notch student, maintaining a 4.0 GPA.
“If i have a passion for it than I don’t want it to be just halfway, I want to go all out for it.”
Lizzie is on scholarship to play soccer for the University of Michigan next year, but what about kicking for their football team?
“I don’t about that one,” said Philibin.
