YWCA breaks ground on housing for low-income families, veterans

The housing will be located along Kensington Avenue in Youngstown

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WYTV) – Housing for all — that’s the goal of the YWCA, and Thursday, the organization made yet another step in that direction.

The YWCA broke ground on a housing project off Kensington Avenue in Youngstown that will benefit low-income families and veterans.

The project has four permanent housing units and one transitional unit. Those at the YWCA say housing is the first step toward stability.

“To help people really maintain their housing is core to everything else. You know, it’s Maslow’s Theory — if you don’t have a roof over your head and food to eat, you can’t move forward, you know, so that really is the impetus,” YWCA President and CEO Leah Merritt.

The YWCA estimates that these houses will be completed and open to families shortly after the new year.
