Mooney downs Hubbard keyed by three big turnovers

Cardinal Mooney football

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WYTV) – In a Division IV, Region 13 contest, three-seed Mooney defeated six-seed Hubbard, 27-9, sparked by three turnovers. The Cardinals advance to play the winner of Crestwood and NDCL.

Hubbard got on the board first when, early in the second quarter, the Eagles recovered a Mooney fumble on a punt. They then went 39 yards to the end zone with Rafael Morales capping the drive with a 2-yard TD run.

But Mooney answered with 14 straight points.

With just 1:46 remaining in the second, the Cardinals recovered a Hubbard fumble on the Eagles 15-yard line, and Mooney took a one-point lead a minute later on Jaylen Hewlett’s 1-yard TD run. Hewlett then added another 1-yard TD run early in the third quarter after Cardinals defensive back Pat Pelini intercepted a pass deep inside Hubbard territory.

The Eagles trimmed their deficit to five midway through the fourth with a 22-yard field goal, but that’s as close as they came.

After a 61-yard kick return from Mooney’s Chris Gruber on the ensuing kickoff, the Cardinals converted a big fourth-and-one with just five minutes remaining. Pelini followed with a 23-yard TD run a minute later for a two-score lead.

Gruber then notched an interception on the next Hubbard possession, before Hewlett scored his third TD on an 18-yard run.

Hewlett finished with 118 yards on 19 carries, while Morales led Hubbard with 68 yards on 24 carries.
