YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WYTV) – Area firefighters stood in the middle of traffic on Meridian Road Saturday afternoon with boots in hand.

They collected money for the Koins for Kids campaign, which benefits Akron Children’s Hospital. Handel’s Ice Cream started the fundraiser and local fire departments joined in.

In the past eight years, they’ve raised more than $230,000.

“The firefighters approached us because in a lot of cases they’re the first responders to accidents involving local kids,” said Jim Brown, Handel’s co-owner. “So they wanted to put back. This is their way of doing it by teaming up with Handel’s and the Koins for Kids campaign.”

The next phase of the Koins for Kids campaign starts in December, when they’ll go to local schools and collect spare change.
