New Middletown, OH (WYTV) – Football is all about toughness, and Springfield’s Russell Seymour certainly fits that bill. He’s an All Conference and All State lineman and a 4 year starter for the Tigers. He’s also an Eagle Scout and leader in the classroom, just a few reasons why Russell is WYTV’s Student Athlete of the Week.
“I definitely get in the trenches get down there and get a little dirty when it comes to football,” said Seymour. “You definitely gotta stay low and just drive your feet when you’re trying to get guys off the ball.”
At 6 foot, 200 pounds, Russell is a lean and mean machine for the Tiger football team. This off-season, he lost 65 pounds to prepare himself for the Air Force Academy.
” I turned in my weight sets for a pair of running shoes,” he said.
The results are clearly evident on the field.
“A lot quicker off the ball. I’ve been able to use that to my advantage, to get guys off the jump of the ball.”
Russell has played a big part in Springfield’s historic season. They’re in the 2nd of the playoffs for the first time in 16 years.
“Definitely the craziest year that I’ve ever played for Springfield or for sports in general,” said Seymour. “This whole football season kind of has been a dream come true for a lot of us.”
Russell is just as driven off the field. He carries a 3.8 GPA and is Treasurer of Student Council.
“Be a well rounded students, get your homework done on time. I pride myself in my academics and to be a student athlete it’s kind of a balance between the two.”
Starting next year, Russell plans to use that work ethic for an even bigger purpose.
“Going to the Air Force and going to the Academy, it’s kind of the best of both worlds…being able to continue my education and serve my country.”
