ValleyCare Health System announces impending layoffs

Hospital, Medical Care Generic

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WYTV) – ValleyCare Health System confirmed its decision to furlough and reduce hours for some employees at its hospitals.

It did not specify when this will happen, how many workers will be affected or what positions will be cut.

ValleyCare Health System released the following statement regarding the layoffs:

We recently made the difficult decision to furlough and reduce hours for some employees. Our hospitals regularly review and adjust staffing based on the number of patients in our care and their medical needs. We remain focused on carefully managing operations to support our commitment to provide high-quality healthcare services to our community.

Members of SEIU 1199 met Thursday afternoon to discuss the situation. It was not open to the media. Union leaders told the workers not to talk with the media.

The union representative said that due to the intense emotion of the meeting, she would not comment at this time.

All of 33 WYTV News’ calls and emails to the SEIU’s director of public affairs have gone unanswered.

ValleyCare Health System includes Northside Medical Center in Youngstown, and Trumbull Memorial and Hillside Rehabilitation hospitals in Warren.
