America’s Got Talent winner to perform 2nd concert at Stambaugh Auditorium

"Murphy Meets Motown" is presented by the Division of Multicultural Affairs at Youngstown State University

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WYTV) – Landau Eugene Murphy Jr., the 2011 winner of America’s Got Talent, will return to Stambaugh Auditorium for a Nov. 17 concert.

“Murphy Meets Motown” is presented by the Division of Multicultural Affairs at Youngstown State University, and is sponsored by WKBN-TV.

Dr. Sylvia Imler, the associate vice president of the Division of Multicultural Affairs, said all proceeds will benefit YSU’s Diversity Leadership Minority Scholarship Fund.

“This Division works in partnership with President Tressel. We have several initiatives where we want to increase and enhance the culture of community here at the university, working in partnership with other divisions and colleges to make sure that our campus climate and culture is healthy, is advancing and practicing inclusion,” she said.

Landau Eugene Murphy Jr. performed in March 2015 for the same cause at Stambaugh Auditorium.

“When I saw that our proceeds for the scholarship were dwindling and that we needed to put in, I reached out to other individuals. Landau’s people were so great, they responded. This is what he’s been doing since he won America’s Got Talent — paying it forward,” Imler said.

The Division of Multicultural Affairs created the Diversity Leadership Minority Scholarship Fund, which was endowed in 2009.

“There’s an application process; we have a committee that screens the applications and then we select. This way, we’ll be able to offer a more substantial scholarship, and hopefully more than one,” she said.

In the past, the scholarship was about $500 and the recipient had to split it into two semesters.

“We’re really excited we’ll be able to increase that scholarship and help more students,” Imler said.

The concert will start at 8 p.m. and tickets can be purchased on Stambaugh Auditorium’s website.

Murphy will be joined by Motown icons such as Glenn Leonard, former lead vocalist for the Temptations, Joe Coleman, lead singer for the Platters, and Joe Blunt, lead singer for the Drifters.
