AUSTINTOWN, Ohio (WYTV) – Monday was another successful day of horse racing at the Mahoning Valley Race Course at Hollywood Gaming in Austintown, but everyone was excited for one race in particular.

There was a total of nine races and hundreds of people came out to place a total of over $1 million in bets. The main attraction? The Steel Valley Sprint.

“Today, and it’s the only day that we can say that, today we took center stage in North America for thoroughbred horse racing,” said track announcer John McGary.

The eighth race was the most competitive and lucrative, with the prize money coming in at $200,000.

“The Steel Valley Sprint, it’s ideally positioned at the end of the year. It kind of gives the 3-year-olds one last chance for a big six-figure purse that are sprinters,” McGary said.

He says the horses in that race came from around the country.

“We had horses coming from Kentucky, we had horses coming from Pennsylvania and also, the horse that finished first but was disqualified came from south Florida.”

Monday’s winner was 3-year-old Mo Dont No, an Ohio-bred horse. He won after Awesome Banner was disqualified for drifting into Mo Dont No’s lane during the race, causing jockey Luis Colon to re-steer and slow the horse.

“When he did that, he lost valuable ground, position, momentum and a chance at a better placing, thereby he was disqualified,” McGary said.

Jeffrey Radosevich, Mo Dont No’s trainer, says he’s capable of running any kind of race.

“It was going three-quarters of a mile, but he can go either way. He can go long or short, and he’s very versatile and he’s a very smart horse…So when they’re smart and Ohio breeds, it makes them faster.”

The horse is hardworking, but Radosevich says he’s also a softie.

“He’s a kid, he’s a very, very nice horse. I mean, he don’t care who’s on him, whatever. He gets a little tough in the morning, but he’s an athlete.”

Mo Dont No has some big plans for 2017 but for now, he’ll be getting some well-deserved time off.
