YSU hopes for huge playoff crowd

The Penguins host Samford Saturday at 5 p.m. at Stambaugh Stadium

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WYTV) – The Youngstown State University football team is hoping for a good turnout of fans when Samford invades Stambaugh Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Of course, it’s a playoff rematch from 25 years ago. That day, it was cold and windy at the Ice Castle.

The Penguins defense took over that game, forcing a grand total of eight turnovers with six interceptions. To this day, the Bulldogs prefer the aerial attack on offense.

YSU Punter and Springfield Local graduate Mark Schuler is looking forward to postseason play.

“I remember hearing stories when my dad was younger and stuff, like back in the 90s when Tressel was here, he’d be like everybody would come to the games,” Schuler said. “Like that was the thing. I remember hearing stories that almost the entire town used to come to the games, and it meant so much to the community, and now that we have a chance to have a home playoff game, and it’s the first time in a decade, I just think that’s huge for the community.”

Saturday’s kickoff is set for 5 p.m. at Stambaugh Stadium.
