Canfield student with perfect ACT score helping others pass test

Seventeen-year-old Max Lee said he wants to help others to achieve their best score on the ACT test

CANFIELD, Ohio (WYTV) – Max Lee is an intelligent 17 year old with a big desire to help others.

He has accomplished something only a small percentage of high school students do. Now, the Canfield High School student is sharing his talents to help other succeed, and he’s doing it free of charge.

Lee got a perfect score — a 36 — on his ACT. Now, he tutors his classmates to help them improve their test scores while he finishes up his senior year of high school.

His tutoring sessions are offered to East High School students in Youngstown and to those who want to take advantage at the Public Library in Boardman.

“Everyone tests differently, so I usually like to give everyone a wide variety of different strategies that they can use and that they can try in their own practice,” Lee said.

Studying for a test can be stressful, especially the ACT.

Classmate Mary Duda decided to study with Lee to improve her test score.

“I was a little nervous at first, but he’s totally not judgmental and so willing to help, so it was really easy to just be one-on-one,” Duda said.

Duda said she struggled with the reading part of the test. Lee suggested making a summary after reading a big chunk of text.

Duda’s score went up a few points after working with Lee.

Lee is also helping high school students in other states, through his non-profit, My Gateway Prep.

“We’ve been able to reach out to Virginia, New York City,” Lee said.

Thanks to donations, he is able to provide the out-of-state groups with pencils, paper and other materials, as well as his strategies for the test.

For Lee, it’s all about helping others and giving back.

“A lot of people have a lot of untapped potential that they could be doing so much better on their ACTs,” he said. “They could be getting into better colleges, but a lot of them don’t have the resources or a lot of them just don’t think about studying, but just like giving them that option, giving them resources is just really helpful.”
