Warren, OH (WYTV) – Warren JFK is the only local team still practicing on this Thanksgiving Day, and senior Bruce Johnson is a big reason for that. He’s attended Kennedy since kindergarten and this weekend, he’ll live out a dream in the Final Four. On top of that, Bruce is a standout in the classroom, making him an easy choice for our Student Athlete of the Week.
“I feel like I’m the leader like the offensive line,” said Johnson. “I take responsibility and I feel like it’s my duty to get these guys ready during the game and if something goes bad in the game, I feel like it’s my job to get things turned around.”
At 6 foot 2, 255 pounds, Bruce Johnson is a dominating force on the offensive line for Kennedy. The Eagles have outscored their opponents by an average of 24 points per game this season, and Bruce has played a big role in that success.
“We always talk about, it’s always on us to plow the way to our victory,” he said. “It’s always on us up front to get our job done so we can get our holes cleared for our backs.”
Bruce uses that same attention to detail in the classroom. He carries a 3.7 GPA and is a member of National Honor Society.
“Student athlete to me means that you put the most effort you can on and off the field. So when you’re in school, I try to give the best effort to get the best grades I can, not slack off. On the field, I also give that effort. I think it’s an honor to be part of the “33 Student Athlete”, it shows the hard work I put in school and the hard work I put in on the field.”
Bruce and the Eagles are now just 2 wins away from their ultimate goal.
“I feel like it gets better every week,” he said. “A new challenge. a new opportunity to get better and have more fun as we go along…doing the best we can and trying to chase the dream.”
