Police: Witness in homicide case crashes car, runs from officers

BOARDMAN, Ohio (WYTV) – Investigators are looking for a witness in a homicide case, who they said ran from U.S. Marshals after crashing a car in Boardman.

Raymond Ortiz, 21, is charged with fleeing and eluding Boardman Police on Tuesday morning. Police said he failed to appear as a witness in a Mahoning County murder case, and U.S. Marshals were following his car on West Boulevard.

Investigators said Ortiz noticed that he was being followed and sped away, later crashing the car on West Boulevard and Melbourne Avenue. Ortiz ran from the area, and investigators were unable to find him. Boardman crash

Nearby, West Boulevard Elementary School kept kids inside for recess, but the school did not go on lock down, despite rumors in the community.

Two passengers in the car were arrested, Boardman Local Schools said..

Boardman Schools said Ortiz is not believed to be armed, and the schools are not at risk. District spokeswoman Amy Radinovic said the school buildings are always locked, and there is a buzzer system in order to gain entrance.
