Salem police find drugs, loaded gun in New Castle man’s car

SALEM, Ohio (WYTV) – Police arrested a New Castle man early Monday morning after finding drugs and a loaded handgun in his car.

Salem officers responded to a report of a suspicious person in front of Suburban Market on Newgarden Avenue shortly before 1 a.m.

They found 35-year-old Michael Betts, Jr., who they said acted nervous as they talked with him. Police said Betts kept going into his car, which had Michigan license plates.

Officers discovered that the plates were fake and his license was suspended.

Police said a K9 found 84 grams of suspected crack cocaine and 27 grams of suspected heroin in the car. They recovered the drugs, gun and cash.

Betts was charged with having weapons while under disability and taken to Columbiana County Jail.
