Witness in Youngstown murder trial surrenders to investigators

Jury selection was postponed Wednesday because the witness did not appear in court

Police are looking for Raymond Ortiz, who they said is a witness to a Youngstown murder case.

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WYTV) – U.S. Marshals said the witness to a Youngstown murder who has been in hiding has surrendered to police.

Raymond Ortiz is now in police custody, facing charges of failure to appear and fleeing and eluding.

Jury selection for the murder trial of Kimani Hodges and Angel Bell had to be postponed Wednesday, because police said Ortiz failed to appear in court and ran from U.S. Marshals Tuesday in Boardman.

Hodges and Bell are accused of killing Jason Fonseca in February.

Police have been looking for Ortiz after he failed to appear at a hearing this week.

Marshals were following Ortiz’s car Tuesday morning when he suddenly sped away and crashed into a utility pole at the corner of West Boulevard and Melbourne Avenue. Witnesses say Ortiz then ran away from the scene and disappeared into the woods.
