(CBS) – The Obama Administration says low-income families spend twice as much than higher income families on buying diapers.
The White House estimates low-income families spend 14 percent of their salary on diapers. There is no federal aid for buying them and families often have limited internet access to find deals online, or they live far from big box stores to buy in bulk.
Clara Gayton says the $75 a month she spends on diapers stretches her budget to the limit.
“I make pretty good money. My husband makes pretty good money, and it still disappears and rent is really high. Then, you have to buy the kids food and clothing,” Gayton said.
Gayton turned to Clear Charity, an organization in California, for help. She buys diapers for half the wholesale price.
The White House launched the Community Diaper Program this past spring. The program connects private companies and non-profits to help provide millions of diapers to families in need. Nearly one in three American families struggle to afford them.
The Cuties brand is making diapers with a simpler design and online discounter jet.com is selling them at no profit with free shipping to community organizations. The program expects to help provide 10 million diapers this year alone.
“It’s hard to go to your local grocery store and expect to get a $5 pack of diapers. That’s not realistic,” said Dana Perez with Clear Charity.
The Rebecca Foundation’s Cloth Diaper Closet is a non-profit organization that loans out cloth diapers to low-income families for free. There are nearby chapters in Warren and Findlay, Ohio. Anyone who is interested in applying for the program is encouraged to message them on Facebook.
Making Kids Count in Boardman also partners with several community agencies to provide diapers.
