Jury charges man who claimed Jesus told him to beat his girlfriend

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WYTV) – A grand jury indicted the man accused of beating his girlfriend after claiming Jesus told him “to get the demons out” of her.

Christopher Hyler, 28, is charged with kidnapping, felonious assault, retaliation, assault and vandalism.

Police said his girlfriend was beaten so badly that she couldn’t open her eyes.

When officers found the Salem man, they said he tried to escape arrest by biting one of them.

While the judge read Hyler his charges last month, he had an outburst in court, saying he didn’t understand why he was in trouble because Jesus told him to do it.

Salem Police said that Hyler is a repeat offender and his name comes up over 50 times in their reports.

He appeared in court again days after that outburst, and caused a commotion in the holding area that could be heard in the courtroom. A guard said he managed to rip off some of the door frame and slam his body against the walls.
