MCDONALD, Ohio (WYTV) – The McDonald girls basketball team is off to a fast start, thanks in large part to senior Sam Homa.

She’s a quiet yet confident leader, an All-Ohio talent for the Blue Devils. Plus, her impact off the court is just as evident, earning Sam the honor of our Student Athlete of the Week.

“I just really enjoy going out with my teammates and being able to do what I love to do,” said Homa. “I just love it.”

Sam has an unwavering passion for basketball. She’s a three-year starter for the Blue Devils and a big reason why the Blue Devils went from two wins her freshman year to 20 wins and a District Runner Up finish last season.

“It’s been really exciting for me, starting from 2-20 to all the way now, starting out the season, 2-0. We can really push for it and it’s really all the work over the years has worked up to this moment and I think we can really go out and make the best of it.”

Sam has certainly made the best of her time at McDonald. She ranks first in her class with a 4.0 GPA and is on track to be valedictorian.

“Getting good grades to me means that I’m really putting myself into my work and trying to make the best person I can be possible,” she said.

On top of school and sports, Sam is president of Student Council, vice president of National Honor Society, and secretary of her class.

“It’s just really time management,” she said. “Being able to put everything I can into all of my schoolwork, the athletics and the extra curricular. It’s a lot, but it really all is worth it.”
