YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WYTV) – It should come as no surprise that three of the eight remaining teams in the FCS playoffs this year. are from the Missouri Valley Football Conference. It’s the 2nd year in a row that’s happened… That is the league that YSU calls home, and the one widely regarded as the best in the country.
It’s also one big reason why the Penguins are having so much success in the playoffs this year. Strength of schedule goes a long way in the post season, and YSU certainly had that advantage Saturday, when they knocked off Jacksonville State, the #3 ranked team in the bracket.
Quarterback Hunter Wells is proud of Valley Football.
“Well there’s no doubt in my mind that we got the toughest conference in the country,” Wells said. “That’s never been the question since I’ve been here. I mean, stats and words and national championships speak for itself. iI think the level of competition in our conference is by far better than any other team in the FCS.
Head Coach Bo Pelini knows that his team is conditioned for postseason play.
“Well you get challenged week to week in our conference and it makes you battle tested so to speak.,” Pelini said. “And obviously it’s a good conference. It’s physical. You see a variety of good offenses and defenses and I think it prepares you well.”
YSU and Wofford will kickoff the FCS Quarterfinals Saturday at 2PM at Stambaugh Stadium.
