Date set for Mill Creek Parks new-committee meeting

The committee's aren't yet formed, but the decision should speed up the selection process

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WYTV) – Monday night’s Mill Creek Metro Parks Board of Commissioners meeting was moving right along.

The Board heard from the planning manager about the possibility of buying 20 acres in Canfield Township near the southern end of the bike path — and 15 acres in Boardman at the headwaters of Cranberry Run Creek. The contract of Golf Pro Andy Santor was renewed for a year.

Then, Commissioner Lee Frey brought up the seven committees being formed.

“I’d like to get an orientation meeting,” he said. “My date was Jan. 21. It’s a Saturday. I’d like to do it at 10 o’clock in the morning.”

But so far it hasn’t been decided who those 49 people will be. About 70 people applied and background checks are being conducted.

“As soon as that process plays out, then we’ll be able to have the committees appointed,” said Commission President John Ragan.

“As I understand it, it takes one day to do the background check,” Frey said

That is, after the applicants give permission to have a background check done.

But by setting an orientation date, Commissioner Frey appeared to be moving the committee process along.

“I think it’s very important we get everybody together, all the seven different committees,” he said. “I’d like to see them at a table and introducing themselves, getting to know each other, starting to talk about some objectives they may have.”

There were no objections to the Jan. 21 date at Metro Parks offices in Canfield. But Ragan reminded everyone there’s no guarantee the committees will be selected by then — the background checks may hold things up.
