Hickory’s Carr & Sharon’s Strickland named All-State

Hickory's Carr breaks D-10 rushing record in big win

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) – Central Martinsburg senior Alex Hoenstine and Beaver Falls head coach Ryan Matsook earned top honors Monday with the release of the Pennsylvania Football Writers Class AAA All-State team.

Hoenstine, who established program records for rushing yards (2,480) and touchdowns (43), garnered AAA player of the year honors after leading the Scarlet Dragons to another PIAA semifinal.

Matsook, tabbed coach of the year, and his Tigers eventually stopped Central’s run and made a little history of their own a week later at Hersheypark Stadium. All-State defensive end and Michigan pledge Donovan Jeter helped Beaver Falls defeat Middletown 30-13 in the season finale on Dec. 10.

Middletown, also making its first championship appearance, put four players on the all-state team, including the program’s all-time leading rusher in senior Jaelen Thompson, senior lineman Ethan Newton, senior linebacker Hunter Landis, and junior athlete Tyreer Mills.

Since 2009, sports writers who cover high school football around Pennsylvania have overseen the all-state process. Players are nominated in all six classifications, and then a statewide ballot is issued to afford all writers the opportunity to cast their votes.

Adding to District 3’s haul is the Lancaster Catholic tandem of junior defensive lineman Peyton Snopek and senior defensive back Bryan Downey. Wyomissing junior DB De’Shaun Wilson also was selected with Juniata senior Josh Parson, who led the District 6 Indians in tackles (92) as a defensive tackle.
