Police surround Boardman apartment after gun report

Boardman Police on Cook Avenue

BOARDMAN, Ohio (WYTV) – A fight inside a Boardman apartment complex led to several officers with military-style armor surrounding the building for over an hour Wednesday afternoon.

Police responded to the building in the 800 block of Cook Avenue, off of South Avenue.

Boardman Police Detective Glenn Patton said they received initial reports that a person involved in the fight had a gun.

Police started to clear the scene just after 2 p.m. – right before school buses started dropping kids off.

While the situation ended peacefully without any shots fired, many neighbors were worried in the meantime.

“Honestly, this is a quiet neighborhood and you hardly see anything like that,” Jermylin White said. “I looked out the window and had seen them. I had never seen that man before and it was just awkward and strange, because I had never seen him in the neighborhood either.”

Neighbors saw rifles, officers in military gear and even the U.S. Marshals.

A SWAT team blocked off the area and evacuated the building. Police surrounded the apartment and arrested two people.

Those suspects, who police have not yet identified, had unrelated warrants for their arrests. Police said they’ll likely be charged with resisting arrest and felony obstruction.

Patton said they didn’t find a weapon in the area.

“The officers on scene were able to contain it. The initial road officers and our tactical team did a excellent job making sure everyone was safe.”

White said he’s relieved the ordeal ended the way it did.
