WARREN, Ohio (WYTV) – A van hit a pole, crashing into the Grossman’s Bargain Outlet building next to Global Fitness in Warren Sunday afternoon. It caused nearly 1,500 people in Trumbull County to lose power before it was later restored.

Just after 2 p.m., the van hit the back of another car on Elm Road.

Ohio State Patrol says the van then swerved right — striking a ditch, utility pole and sign — and continued across a parking lot before crashing into Grossman’s storefront on the 3800 block of Elm Road NE.

The driver, a 59-year-old Warren man, was taken to Trumbull Memorial Hospital. No one else was hurt. The van suffered severe damage and was towed from the scene.

OSP says the investigation is ongoing, but preliminary results indicate a medical condition may have contributed to the crash.

“There was reportedly a lot of vehicles that were parked here,” OSP Sgt. Daniel Jesse said. “Very fortunate that he didn’t strike anyone else.”

Elm Road was partially closed for about 45 minutes while Ohio Edison cleared power lines from the roadway.

The accident caused the entire plaza to lose power.

Initially, First Energy reported approximately 1,500 people were without power as officials had to shut down line wires to work on them.
