POLAND, Ohio (WYTV) – Firefighters in Poland were trying to find the source of a fuel-like smell filtering through some homes along Route 170 on Thursday afternoon.
They cleared the scene by evening and said the fumes are not hazardous.
Though crews were never able to figure out exactly where the smell was coming from, they think it could be from an old house’s heating oil tank that’s leaking. Officials determined there is a product in the sewer system that smells like gasoline.
Residents in the area of Poland Presbyterian Church complained about the smell of gasoline or some other fuel in their basements.
Mahoning County Emergency Management Agency Director Dennis O’Hara has some advice for homeowners.
“Open up some windows, turn on some fans, and just ventilate your house,” he said. “They are not saying that the levels or the odor is hazardous but they just want to advise the public that if you are smelling it, to open up some windows and ventilate your house.”
Firefighters opened fire hydrants in the neighborhood to flush out the system.
